What is the purpose of the YMCA?

The YMCA of Barbados seeks to promote the harmonious development of individuals by encouraging them to higher moral concepts, which gives significance to their lives and guidance to their natural abilities.  The object of the Association is the development of the spiritual, social, physical and intellectual well-being of the youth of Barbados.  Over the years the Barbados YMCA has provided a place for the youth to develop their minds, body, and spirit.  Our programmes aim to positively impact our community as we continue to “Build Youth, Build a Better Barbados”.

Is the YMCA an entity of the Barbados Government?

No, the Barbados YMCA is not a governmental institution.  The Barbados YMCA is Registered Charity #1417 under the Charities Act CAP 243.  The Barbados YMCA is not aligned with any government or political entities, and it operates independently.  To achieve our goals and objectives, the YMCA partners with the business community, government agencies and local community leaders to pull together the resources and leadership required for our various initiatives and programmes.

Is the Barbados YMCA affiliated with other YMCAs around the world?

Yes, the Barbados YMCA is part of the global network of YMCAs. The World YMCA is the oldest and one of the largest youth organisations in the world. Founded in London in 1844, it has grown to reach over 65 million people a year across 120 countries worldwide divided up into 6 area alliances (sub-regions).  The Barbados YMCA is part of the Latin America and the Caribbean Alliance (LACA) which serves 1.5 million people each year in more than 400 communities in 25 countries.

How can I get involved with the YMCA?

There are many ways to get involved with the YMCA – from membership and programme participation to volunteering and fundraising. Whether it’s becoming a member, coaching a football team, mentoring young people, advocating or volunteering as a board member.  We rely on our members, programme participants, donors and volunteers to work alongside us to strengthen communities and improve the lives of others.  We work to support and engage young people to be the next generation of changemakers by providing them with opportunities to learn new skills and become leaders in their communities now and throughout their lives.

Our Mission & Vision

The Barbados YMCA is dedicated to the development of the spiritual, social, physical, and intellectual well-being of the youth of Barbados.

Ramona Smart

General Secretary of the Barbados YMCA

“I joined the Barbados YMCA as General Secretary in June 2022. As the leader of the Secretariat, I am tasked with the day-to-day operations of the YMCA.  Here at the Y, we believe that investing in our youth is an investment in the future of our country. We are dedicated to creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where young people can discover their potential, cultivate their passions, and develop the skills they need to become responsible, engaged, and successful citizens. Through educational opportunities, sports programmes, and holistic development initiatives, we strive foster a culture of excellence, leadership, and social responsibility, empowering our youth to become active and engaged citizens who contribute positively to their communities and the broader Caribbean region.”

Akeil Payne

Programme Coordinator of the Barbados YMCA

For over a decade, I have dedicated myself to empowering the youth of Barbados. At the YMCA, we believe nurturing our youth is key to building a stronger, more resilient Barbados. Through initiatives such as after-school programmes, youth leadership training, and sports development, I have seen firsthand how our efforts provide young people with the tools they need to thrive academically, emotionally, and socially. It is my mission to ensure that every child who walks through our doors leaves feeling more confident, capable, and ready to contribute to a better Barbados.

Carlos Moore

President of the Barbados YMCA

Welcome to The Barbados YMCA!

I would like to thank you on behalf of our members and Board of Directors for taking the time to visit us and familiarise yourself with what we are doing here at the Y.

I am sure you will find a variety of opportunities for you and yours to participate in our wide range of activities and become a part of the YMCA Family.

It is my honour to lead such a historic organisation which has been around for more than 140 years.  We hold the distinction of being the oldest YMCA chapter in Latin America and The Caribbean. The Barbados YMCA has seen and contributed to its share of Barbados history and with your help will continue to provide for all who come through our doors.

The Y has always been dear to me as my paternal lineage is from the immediate vicinity.  Additionally, I attended both primary and secondary school in The Bridgetown area, all of these making the organisation a part of my DNA. My leadership participation comes through my activity in youth sports and The Y has afforded me the opportunity to provide coaching and mentorship to the youth we serve. If you are reading this, you too may be compelled to give of your time, knowledge, experience and love and I encourage you to reach out to us so we can together identify a way for you to give.

We look forward to hearing from and welcoming you as we build our youth and build a better Barbados.”
